The TROPICAL 7s is excited to announce a new partnership with USA RUGBY (USAR) who have recognised the 2023 TROPICAL 7s tournament as a USAR referee development camp. The camp will be attended by 22 referees and 6 referee coaches.
TROPICAL 7s has been committed to the development of referees in the US and from abroad through its well-established referee programme and has provided coaching to all participating referees since 2019. The 2023 TROPICAL 7s will now be the first time the tournament is officially recognised as an official referee development camp for USA Rugby. The 2023 tournament will see over 50 referees officiate during the competition - the tournament's largest referee program yet.
The commitment by USA Rugby to host a referee development camp during the 2023 TROPICAL 7s will enhance the the quality and level of officiating at the tournament and now formally plays an important role in developing the current and future generation of referees in the United States.
“We are excited to be announced as an official development camp for USA Rugby referees and support the ongoing development of match officials in the US,” said Tropical 7s Executive Director John Siner. “Tropical 7s has quickly grown into one of the world's major rugby tournaments, and our partnership with USA Rugby is further validation of our event's attractiveness to not only teams and players but also aspiring referees.”
In April last year, USA Rugby announced a major restructure for referee development across the country, creating a new high-performance referee group, a national development group, and four new regional development groups.
The TROPICAL 7s takes place annually every Easter week in Tampa, Florida, and welcomes over 150 teams from across the US and around the world with boys and girls divisions at U18, U16, U14, U12 and University/U23 age brackets. The tournament welcomes qualified and experienced match officials from across the globe to officiate at one of the world's leading international youth rugby events. The Tropical 7s referee programme offers referees a great experience both on and off the pitch at a world class venue in Tampa with referee coaches working directly with all appointed match officials during the event.
