International Coaches Announced for 2018

RDJ LogoTropical 7s is excited to announce the continued partnership with RDJ Sport Development as the Official Coaching Provider to the 2018 Tropical 7s. Following on from last year’s popular training camps, RDJ Sport Development appointed two experienced international coaches in Andy Barlow (Wales) and Maso Bowles (South Africa) to work with participating teams at this year’s tournament.

Andy Barlow (pictured left) is a former Wales Rugby League performance coach at senior, U18 & U16 levels. Andy has also coached age grade rugby union for the Llanelli Scarlets, has been involved with both the London Irish and Natal Sharks academy programmes and was the defence coach for the Lithuanian Rugby Union team helping them win the European Nations Cup.

Andy BarlowMaso Bowles (pictured right) is former professional rugby player of 10 years having played for the Natal Sharks in South Africa and also represented his country at U21 level. After concluding his professional career, Maso has transitioned into a strength & conditioning coach in the UK.

Participating teams at this Easter’s Tropical 7s tournament will be able to benefit directly from their combined experience and receive customised coaching sessions on-site at the Omni Orlando Championsgate Resort in the days leading up to this year’s tournament which will be held on 30-31 March 2018.

Andy and Maso will also design 2018 Tropical 7s Athlete Combine, which provides an opportunity for both teams and individual players to benchmark themselves against other athletes and through a standardised series of physical and skills tests:  speed, acceleration, agility, explosivity, footwork, passing and endurance.  The Tropical 7s Athlete Combine takes place on the afternoon of Thursday 29th March 2018.

Results of the combine will be recorded by our team with overall age grade winners receiving a prize at the Trophy Presentation. Individual performance data can be made available to coaches after the tournament.  Participation in the Athlete Combine is free of charge for all 2018 registered teams.

RDJ Sport & Development, based in the UK, has extensive experience of organising international youth rugby training camps and international rugby exchange programmes for elite rugby players in the UK, South Africa and Europe.  Further details can be found at
